India, S Korea to start talks on N-ties

NEW DELHI: India and South Korea on Friday agreed to start negotiations between the two nations for civil nuclear cooperation. The two had earlier exchanged drafts of an inter-governmental agreement on peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

The pact was reached in a meeting between foreign minister S M Krishna and his South Korean counterpart Yu Myung-Hwan in Seoul. Krishna said this agreement was important for India’s initiative to look for a more "rational" energy mix.

They also discussed ways to enhance bilateral defence and security cooperation, including through expanded naval cooperation in anti-piracy operations. "In order to meet the new challenges that international shipping is facing from non-State actors especially in the Gulf of Aden, we believe it is time for our two countries to expand our naval cooperation. Perhaps, we can do so by holding the next joint exercise," he said.
